On 18 April, we can fly the flag again in our city. Tilburg celebrates its birthday! It was on this date in 1809 that Louis Napoleon visited Tilburg. At the beginning of the 19th century, Tilburg still consisted of a collection of hamlets, which meant it could actually be called a sprawling village. Nevertheless, the then French king and brother of Napoleon was very impressed by its vastness and also saw the emerging textile industry. For him, these were sufficient reasons to grant Tilburg city rights. In contrast to the historic cities in Brabant, Tilburg is actually still a youngster. But from the end of the 19th century onwards, our city developed rapidly. On “Tilburg's birthday”, we will look at the developments that have led to us now being one of the largest cities in the country.
