In the monologue *BANG*, Hanneke van der Paardt picks her life apart and tries to put the puzzle back together. It’s about those years when you’ve just left your parents’ home but haven’t really settled anywhere yet. And about how fear can hit you unexpectedly and with full force.
Endless fear
You’re nineteen, you’ve just moved into student accommodation, you’ve just started a new course, and suddenly you’re scared. At first you hope it’s just an MDMA comedown, but then… then the fear sticks with you. Scared of mirrors, scared of eyes, scared of people in the street shouting things. You jump out of your skin whenever you hear a loud noise. When you’re watching a slightly scary crime film and a shot is fired. You find yourself wondering whether there’s some deeper meaning behind the numbers and letters on car number plates. Or whether the voices you hear through the open window might actually be voices in your head.
At 25, you sit down and try to make sense of the past few years. Are you actually doing a bit better, or are you just going to remain trapped in this endless fear until you die?
