This fall, De Pont Museum will present its first exhibition featuring the American artist Matthew Monahan (1972). Left Hand Path brings together two recently acquired sculptures and a generous donation from the artist.

The works, created between 2012 and 2023, demonstrate how Monahan continually reinvents the human figure. His enigmatic sculptures and works on paper navigate between the past and the future, vulnerability and strength, creation and destruction.

The exhibition also marks a special reunion. Thirty years ago, Martijn van Nieuwenhuyzen - then curator at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and now director of De Pont Museum - organized Monahan’s first museum exhibition in the Netherlands. In Left Hand Path, the artist and curator come together once again. With his idiosyncratic view of the human figure, Monahan adds a new voice to De Pont’s collection, sparking unexpected dialogues about the body, materials, and the relationship between past and present.
