An iconoclasm in Tilburg? Ans Verdijk goes all out at the “Metropolitan Museum.” Nothing is safe anymore. The artist is reimagining old sculptures. With stunning results.
Verdijk follows the lines and curves of historic 19th-century sculptures. She analyzes the colors and undulations. Using a grinding wheel, she alters the sculptures and scrapes away their characteristic contours. She distorts their former function and attempts to reshape history, to fix it in an Ansian way. “A new iconoclasm has become unnecessary; these sculptures can be interpreted in many ways and from many perspectives; they are universal!” says the enthusiastic artist.
