The Skatalites
De Jamaicaanse groep, the Skatalites, geldt als een van de grondleggers van ska en speelde daarmee ook een belangrijke rol in het ontstaan van rocksteady en reggae. Begin jaren zestig brachten ze jazz, calypso, mento en rhythm-and-blues samen met de kenmerkende offbeat die ska zijn ritme gaf.
The story behind the band
The original lineup lasted less than a year and a half, but in that short time it made a huge impact on the Jamaican music scene. The musicians played on hundreds of recordings and served as the regular backing band for producers such as Coxsone Dodd, Duke Reid, and Prince Buster. Classics like “Guns of Navarone” and “Phoenix City” became benchmarks for generations of artists. Their influence extends far beyond Jamaica and can be heard in the music of bands like The Clash, The Police, Sublime, and No Doubt.
Living monument
Although the lineup changed regularly over the years, the band remained active. The Skatalites have become a living monument within Jamaican music and continue to bring their rich musical legacy to stages around the world. On Sunday at the Tilburg Fair, the audience will therefore be treated not just to a nostalgic look back, but to a performance by a band that was at the forefront of one of the most influential musical movements of the past sixty years.
