Inspired by Prof. Rosemary Hoefte's research project A Western Civilization Offensive,
this project explored how colonial history continues to have an impact today. During Tangible
Heritage, stories of connection, migration, and pride came to life through objects brought along
— from a Javanese djare to a Curaçaoan lensu — tangible carriers of memory,
also found on The Memory of Tilburg. At the Textile Museum, this theme was literally brought to life
during a workshop using old dye recipes, which sparked conversations about
raw materials and their colonial origins. The focus then shifted to the Catholic
missionary movement. During A Western Civilization Offensive?, the double faces of
mission, education, and oppression became visible, while walks through Tilburg showed how this
past is still interwoven in the city. In Solidarity and Resistance: Then and Now, the power of
resistance was heard, from women in slavery to Black Lives Matter. With Migration: From Diaspora to
Impact, we concluded with stories about slavery and medical abuse, climate and the
search for ‘home’, poignantly depicted in Jeremy Flohr's documentary Rumah Kita.
