The Pigeon of Peace
This is the mural 'The Pigeon of Peace'. This painting was created especially for the 75th anniversary of freedom in Tilburg.
About the artwork
The white pigeon is known worldwide as the symbol of peace. This mural, created by Veldinho, plays with optical illusion: it appears as if the wall is breaking open, while in reality this is represented by smoke and pieces of stone scattering, accompanied by the words “war” and “pain”. A white dove flies up from this opening, carrying green twigs with the word “freedom” written on them in its beak and feet. The words “peace” and “love” are written in colourful graffiti letters around the bird. According to the artist, these positive words belong with the dove, while the negative terms are left behind.
About the artist
Erik Veldmeijer, who works under the name Veldinho, is a graphic artist from Tilburg. He has been drawing since he was a child, and graffiti has been an important part of his work since he was nineteen. In addition to graffiti, he is also active as a painter. Several of his murals can be admired in Tilburg, while his canvases can be found at local businesses such as Buutvrij and Stuen Store. In 2021, Veldmeijer was nominated for the Tilburg Volunteer Award.
