In Anton de Kom, my father, Doris, a passionate population researcher, takes you on a journey that begins with a lecture in a theater but quickly turns into a deeply personal story. As an adopted child from Suriname, Doris struggles with her identity. Her Dutch parents feel like a puzzle piece that doesn't quite fit. Her desire to understand who she truly is leads her away from her adoptive parents toward her Surinamese roots.
During her search, she discovers the story of Anton de Kom, the legendary Surinamese resistance hero who fought against colonial oppression. His struggle deeply resonates with her. The more she delves into his life, the more parallels she sees with her own struggles. What begins as a search for identity turns into a poignant encounter with a man who feels like the father she’s always longed for.
