In this minimal opera, two humanoids speculate with a healthy dose of humor and philosophy about what it means to be human in the present day. Human life is celebrated, albeit by two robots!

In this philosophical opera, Nineties explores fundamental questions: what does it mean to be human? Why do we do what we do? And what do we stand for every day? They draw inspiration from the ideas of philosopher Helmuth Plessner. He argues that humans are artificial by nature. According to him, humans are beings capable of both experiencing themselves and looking at themselves: humans look over their own shoulders, as it were. They are not at home in nature, like animals, but shape their own lives and the world around them. With the help of ‘artificialities’ such as language, technology, and tools, humans stumble through life. Aimlessly and necessarily, we search for meaning and purpose.
